Nutrition

Imagine walking into the preschool in the morning to the heavenly scent of homemade banana muffins in the air or as you arrive in late morning, your senses are enticed with the aromatic smell from the homemade black bean and rice enchiladas cooking for lunch. Your mouth starts to water as you realize your children are getting to eat those delicious homemade meals everyday courtesy of our cook, Mrs. Cathy. Not only are our meals delicious, but they are nutritious.

At Asbury Preschool, we believe children deserve the best, and that includes the foods we serve. We go above and beyond to meet the nutritional requirements set by the state by serving snacks and hot meals consisting of fresh local ingredients such as fruits, vegetables, and herbs, some even grown on site with the help from the children. Mrs. Cathy brings her experience as a personal chef to create various meals made from scratch for the children each week, always including at least one vegetarian entrée and making sure to limit the amount of processed foods to a minimum.

Mrs. Cathy, always ready to innovate, also is willing to work with parents and consider their suggestions. Her two great loves are cooking and kids, and that shines through at Asbury Preschool.

Our Facility

Asbury Preschool is located on the first and second floors of one wing of Asbury United Methodist Church, and has a separate ground-level entrance off of the parking lot. Located at 806 Clarendon Street in Durham, Asbury Preschool is across the street from Duke’s East Campus and conveniently located to the rest of the university and medical center community.

  • Classrooms
imageAsbury Preschool has well-equipped classrooms tailored to each particular age group. While the infant room features include eight full-sized cribs, carpeting, a changing table, sinks and refrigerator, as well as plenty of beginning toys, classrooms for toddlers and preschoolers offer a wide range of stations for the children to learn, grow, and play. All meet or exceed state standards.
  • Indoor Play Space
imageWhen there is inclement weather, Asbury Preschool offers considerable space for children to run around and have free play indoors, as well as for more organized activities. In addition to the classrooms, the school’s large multipurpose room (known as the “Green Room” for its once-dominant color) and the church’s fellowship hall serve as great, carpeted open spaces to ride tricycles and other riding toys and to engage in other kinds of imaginative play. Sometimes hula hoops and bouncy balls come out. There are even a small indoor slide and exercise mats to play on.
  • Lending Library
imageTo encourage literacy, Asbury Preschool features a large collection of children’s and parenting books available for loan for up to one week. The books range from the simplest board and pop-up books to those for the more advanced reader. Non-English books are also available. The school purchases most of the books in the lending library but will also accept appropriate donations in good condition.
