Pre-K II

The Pre-Kindergarten II at Asbury Preschool is led by two teachers. It is suitable for children aged 4-5 years old. To ensure that your child is properly guided through the program, we maintain the teacher to student ratio at 1:6 with up to 12 children.

Goals for our Pre-K II

Our Preschool program introduces language, math, science and social skills in an environment that cultivates independence and a love of learning. Specific program goals:

Social/Emotional:

  • Use words to express oneself and one’s feelings
  • Play cooperatively in large and small groups

Language:

  • Use fuller, more complex sentences
  • Remember lines of simple poems, songs, and rhymes, and have the ability to tell and retell stories
  • Take turns during conversation

Cognitive:

  • Understand and follow three-step instructions
  • Identify, correspond, and graph numbers 1-10
  • Hold a book turning pages from right to left

Gross Motor:

  • Run with agility
  • Walk backwards, skip, walk on balance beam, jump over objects, and walk up and down steps using alternating feet
  • Incorporate motor skills into a game

Fine Motor:

  • Use scissors with ease
  • Demonstrate use of computer keyboard and mouse
  • Have a basic grasp of the dominant hand
  • Draw people, print letters, crudely include scenes in drawings, and copy or draw shapes
  • Zip, button, and dress oneself unassisted

Activities

Our preschoolers engage in a variety of indoor and outdoor age-appropriate activities every day designed to help them develop physically, cognitively, emotionally and socially.

Indoor:

  • Participating in daily lessons based on the week’s learning theme
  • Listening to stories
  • Singing, dancing and acting out songs
  • Art projects
  • Free-play with friends in the room’s centers including block area, dramatic play, language corner, quiet corner, science, sensory, manipulatives/fine motor, creative art and technology
  • Reading books in the cozy corner
  • Active play in Asbury Preschool’s large indoor play spaces

Outdoor:

  • Playing in the sandbox
  • Making up and playing games
  • Using the play structure independently
  • Playing with friends
  • Using with outside toys like trucks and balls
  • Riding trikes

Parent Communication and Involvement

Daily reports are sent home every day and cover everything from how long your child napped and how much they ate to activities enjoyed and any other pertinent announcements.
